My ancestor was an Elisabeth Cornack or McCormick who married an Archibald McWilliam probably in the late 1790's Their daughter Janet McWilliam born 13 Mar 1793 in Kirkcowan, Wigton, Scotland. (if this is indeed my ancestor. Janet married a William Dougan probably around 1817 since first child was born 4 Aug 1818 . Their children were Henry, Elizabeth, William, Alexander, Janet, John, Archibald and Andrew (my ancestor) This info came from the Parish Records of Leswalt, in Wigtonhsire. At this time the family lived at Graigoch Mill, in Leswalt. Janet's death certificate in 1864 lists her parents as Archibald McWilliam and Elizabeth McCormick both deceased. So you can see I am not positive that the Janet born 1793 was my Janet for sure but according to census records my Janet was born about 1793-4 so I think it is possible that the info on the death cert. could be an error. Thought you might know if there was an Elisabeth Cornack who married a Dougan. The family moved to Lochton Mill in Ayrshire sometime after 1835. Helen in LR

Dear John, One of my relatives namely Marion Walker, the daughter of Samuel Walker of Crossmichael and his wife Jacobina Walker, married George MacCornack, born 1856, in Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. At one time, George MacCornack was living in Ivy Cottage, part of the Cally Estate in Gatehouse of Fleet.  George was there in 1913. Does this George have any relationship to your family? entry for your McCornack List

Date: 11/28/2000

From: mckieart@earthlink.net (Barbara Mckie)

Dear Mr. McCornack, I was very impressed with your genealogical websites (not to mention all of your other great websites!).

Having failed to be able to enter a new listing on your McCornack ancestry list (not a bit boring to me because I am a McCornackdescendent!) while on-line at that website, I'm sending this along for entry.

My 4x-greatgrandmother was one Margaret McCornick (on another document Cornack) who lived in Sorbie and Minnigaff, among other places inWigtonshire and Kirkcudbright Stewartry. She was born about 1765 and married Alexander McKie, a carter, who was also from that area of southwest Scotland. I am directly descended from their son, William McKie, a weaver who was born in 1783/1784 at Sorbie. Although I don'tknow yet all of his siblings, William had a sister Elisabeth who was born in Minnigaff about 1798 and who married and died in Newton Stewart in 1881. William, the handloom weaver, died at Newton Stewart on July 15, 1861 and both he and his sister Elisabeth are buried in the Minnigaff Kirkyard. I am searching for anyone who is related to our Margaret McCornick's line, especially because I have yet to find any evidence of her marriage to Alexander McKie or anything about their death dates/place (probably Minnigaff), or who their McKie and McCornick parents were. Before I leave this earth for a better place, I hope to trace these lines back further.Hope to hear from you if you have the time to drop me a line. All the best, Jim McKie

I have the following info on my relation to A McCornack family and I was wandering if you could help me if your info on the McCornacks went back far enough to shed light as to the parents of Mary McCornack. If indeed we are related but there weren't alot of people in Wigtownshire back then.

Descendants of Mary McCornack

1. Mary McCornack was born in Scotland and died in New York. She married James Mcrobert Abt. 1750 in Scotland. He was born Abt.1730 in Scotland and died 1774 in Kirkinner Parish,Wigtownshire,Co. Galloway,Scotland.

Notes for Mary McCornack:

According to Betty Rode "Mary McCornack possibly came to the U.S. on the ship Golden Rule commanded by Captain Cragg, possibly in Sept. of 1775". REM reports that she arrived with her children in 1775 and settled in Whiting ( near Springfield in Pittsfield township),Windsor Co.,Vt. in the Hawks mountains.

Per JMB, the Scottish parish records (LDS microfilm) show the actual handwritten account of the name without a 's".

Per VMW,Mary Mcornack died 2-1-1813 in Addison or Rutland Co,VT.

Children of Mary McCornack & James Mcrobert are:

a. JANNOT MCROBERT b. 1755, Clutagh, Kirkinner Parish, Wigtownshire, Co Galloway, Scotland

b. JOHN MCROBERT b. July 31, 1758, Clutagh, Kirkinner Parish, Wigtownshire,Co Galloway,Scotland d. April 4, 1813, Whiting, Orwell Co, VT.

c. WILLIAM MCROBERT b. September 1761, Kirkinner Parish, Wigtownshire, Co Galloway, Scotland d. Aug. 26, 1839,Chazy, Clinton Co,NY

d. MARY MCROBERT b. 1763,Clutagh, Kirkinner Parish,Wigtownshire, Co Galloway, Scotland

e. PENELOPE MCROBERT b. 1765, Clutagh, Kirkinner Parish, Wigtownshire, Co Galloway,Scotland

f. JAMES MCROBERTS b. Abt.1770,Clutagh, Kirkinner Parish, Wigtownshire,Co Galloway,Scotland d. Abt. 1850, Farmington Oakland Co, MI.

g. MARGARET MCROBERT

h. ELIZABETH MCROBERT b. 1769, Clutagh, Kirkinner Parish,Wigtownshire, Co Galloway, Scotland d. Dec. 24,1828, Clinton Co, NY.

Per VMW Jannot,John & Mary born in Knockeffrick,William in Wigtownshire, Penelope in Meikle Clutchad. All of these are presumably in County Galloway and I know the Mcrobert family came over to USA from Isle of WHITHORN with Marys, mother and her husband James Martin.

Thank you for any help,

DOUGAN/ORR/MILROY/McCORNICK/McGARVA FAMILY

Henry Dougan and his wife Ann Milroy were living at Barhapple

c Elizabeth Dougan b. 05 Mar 1822;

c John Dougan b. 15 Oct 1823;

(Theory: Henry and Ann Milroy Dougan were living at Barhapple in the early 1820's. Henry died and Ann Milroy Dougan married John Orr in the late 1820's or early 1830's. From this second marriage of Ann Milroy, Ann Orr was than born in mid 1830's and eventually became the great, grandmother of Nessie Fraser)

John and Ann Milroy Orr were the great-great-grand parents of Nessie Fraser.

John Orr b. ~ 1797; d. 23 Mar 1877

Ann Milroy Orr b. ~ 1790; d. 7 Mar 1874

c Ann Orr. b. ~ 1833-1837; (great-grand mother of Nessie Fraser)

m William McCornick. b. 25 Apr 1838 in Kirkcowan

Theory: William McCornick is assumed to be the father of Agnes Aithen Orr, even though he was not married to Ann Orr at the time of birth. William was working as a servant or ploughman during the 1861 census, living in the home of John and Ann Milroy Orr. After the 1861 census, William McCornick probably married Ann Orr. From: mchaffie@frognet.net (MLRamsey)

regarding McCornack McCornock families, persecuted, where they lived and some of what they went through some specifics, 1684

Christmas 1999, right out of the blue, a wonderful Scot in Wigtownshire sent me by e-mail a number of photos of the stone house ruins at Gargrie as it now appears on maps.   The sender recommended GC Books at Wigtown. It is second largest 2nd hand bookstore in Scotland, and has all sorts of maps, etc. Owners are John and Julie Carter (as I recall).

I know of William Magie in a southern state, retired oilman, who has been able to trace his line. He visited the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Center at Dumfries with about 10 of his kin.   James Corbet of Florida some years ago sent pages from Register ofthe PC. His ancestor was banished, able to return home.   Those pages so full of information that I decided to purchase more from the Edinburgh Library. Regarding the spellings, the Presbyterian ministers had all been forced out of their parishes by order of the king (espec 1666-1688), and replaced by episcopalian ministers often from distant places. It certainly appears that the pronunciation by the McCornacks was exact. The episcopalian ministers were in late 1684 told by the Sheriff (John Grahame of Claverhouse, who had taken over) to list all in their parish and to mark the names of those who were excused for missing church service.

My compilation is 1,500 or so pages, A-Z names of Covenanters, 1600s, or any I find in America with same names, mainly 1700s, 1800s, and chronologies, etc.   David Dobson's recent books on Scottish emigrants have provided huge amounts of material.   SCMA stands for Scottish Covenanter Memorials Association, and the former Honorable Secretary George Scott and I exchanged and included all individuals, dates, places in about 1995 in our compilations.

From my book (on disks) Covenanter Martyrs and Transportees:

An Annotated Index of People, Places and Events in Scotland and America c 1992, 1998, 2000

Mr. Andrew McCormock, minister of the gospel, Covenanter, one of about 50 k. at Rullion Green-Pentland-hills, near Edinburgh, 28 Nov 1666. Tombstone has inscription, was erected 28 Sep 1738, Scripture reference: Rev. xii, 11. [Hanna's Scotch Irish.] Purves in Fair Sunshine says minister Andrew McCormick was fr. n. IRE.   Scott's SCMA Index listing: Rev. Andrew McCormick. Killed at Rullion Green. Stone there names him. He was a pious Irish non-conformist minister. 1666.

McCornock, Alexander; Andrew; James; Marian; lived at Kirbroyne, Patrick Coltrans Land, Kirkinner parish, Wigtownshire, 15 Oct 1684. PC10.265.

Jean McCornick lived at Mark of Shanaton, Kirkcowan parish, Wigtownshire, near John McHaffie in Gargerie per Oct 1684 parish list. [Mark of Shanaton is likely the marketplace of a village. Shennaton now has 5 star hotel.

McIlwian, Jonet, w. of Gilbert Wilson, at Glenvernock, parishioner, Penighame Wigtownshire, 29 Sep 1684 by Mr James Colhoun p49 of Parish Lists; w-wif. Also at Glenvernock, over 12 years of age, were: Wm. Wilson, serving man; And. Finlaw, serving man; Agnes Dowglass, serving woman; and Wm. Dowglass, husband, cottar and his wife Isabell Kennedie, per p. 49 of Parish Lists of Wigtownshire and Minnigaff, 1684. Glenvernock was near Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, per information shared by Mr. George Scott of the Scottish Covenanter Memorials Association SCMA Index. Gilbert Wilson's neighbor John McKie/Magie in Barnkirk was also a Covenanter and banished, and he and Gilbert McKie were accused of being given food by John McCarmock [seen also McCormock] in Portnessock, 1684, per PC9.381. John McKie in Barnkirk seemingly also lived near Newton Stewart. I wonder if the following is another dau of Gilbert and his wife: Jonet Wilson, w. of Wm. McCornock, cottar, at Glenrassie, parishioner, Penighame Wigtownshire, 29 Sep 1684 by Mr James Colhoun p49 of Parish Lists; w-wif.

See their listings. Gilbert's neighbor John McKie in Barnkirk was also banished, and he and Gilbert McKie were accused of being given food by John McCarmock [seen also McCormock] in Portnessock, 1684, per PC9.381. See McKie/Magie listings; also McCornock/McCormock listings.

Wilson, Jonet w. of Wm. McCornock, cottar, at Glenrassie, parishioner, Penighame Wigtownshire, 29 Sep 1684 by Mr James Colhoun p. 49 of Parish Lists; w-wif. I wonder if this Jonet could perhaps be a dau of Gilbert Wilson and his wife Jonet McIlwian? The list of those at Glenrassie: Gilbert Dowglass, husband and Marg. McIlroy, wife; Pet. Dowglas, son; Wm. McCornock, husband, cottar, and Jonet Wilson, wife.
